The Art of saying "Yes" and The Skill of saying "No"

The Art of saying "Yes"

This is tried and tested in the day to day life of IT Production Support...

Around 8 years back...One of my mentor told me ...when someone reaches to you with additional work, "work" which you know is not urgent or important for you...when you are already too busy... don't say  a straight "No" but don't say "Yes" either, just say that "you will look into it" (instead of saying "Yes, I will get it done"). Once you say that, just continue with what you were originally doing and ignore this additional work. Most of the times ...90% of such additional work will get resolved by itself without you taking any action. Rest 10% of the remaining work, if genuinely critical, will automatically become urgent and important and will not be categorized as "additional".

The Skill of saying "No"

This works in all phases of your life. When you mean "No" say "No", don't say "Yes".

For example, employee asking boss for a undeserving salary hike. In this case, boss should say a point blank "No". If instead of saying "No" the boss says "I will look into it" then it is actually interpreted as "Yes, I accept your concern, I will do something to fix it". This might set incorrect expectations for the employee.
